They are among the rarest and most coveted relics in the world. To the Grey Drow of Muxnir, who hold the largest known collection, they are the most sacred objects in existence, the focus of all prayer and the foundation of their scholarship. Elsewhere they are treated as royal treasures, kept in the vaults of kings and collectors, though few who hold them understand what they truly possess. ### Appearance A Luxon Beacon takes the form of a perfect dodecahedron, a twelve-sided solid of an unknown crystal resembling moonstone, pale and clouded and faintly glowing. Within it, light drifts and turns like a field of slowly moving stars, and those who have handled one report that it pulsates and thrums at the touch. Beacons are notably heavier than they appear. Many are found today set within ornate frames of brass or gold, often with handles fixed to either side, but these are mortal additions, fitted so that the beacons might be carried more easily. ### Properties The scholars of Muxnir have studied the beacons for millennia, and while much about them remains theory, a number of their properties are well recorded. A person who touches a beacon and holds their concentration upon it for around a minute receives what the Muxnirians call a Fragment of Possibility, a tiny, greyish bead of energy that rises from the beacon and floats into the one who summoned it, imbuing them with possibility. For a short time, the bearer may call upon this possibility to alter a single moment of chance in their favour - a strike that would have missed, a blow that would have landed, a fall that would have been fatal. Once spent, or after several hours, it fades. A beacon will grant only one fragment each day, and no person has ever been recorded bearing two at once. Beyond this gift, the beacons are the source of the art of Dunamancy, the manipulation of time and gravity. The wizards of Muxnir spend years gazing into them, claiming to see within the drifting light the countless possibilities of what could be, and it is from these visions that the faith of the Luxon draws its teachings. The great concentration of beacons held in Muxnir is also credited with sparing the city from the corruption that consumed Vangrallag during the Dawn-War. ### History The origin of the beacons is tied to that of the Luxon itself, and is largely theoretical. It is generally accepted that the Luxon split itself into the beacons before the arrival of the Pantheon, though whether it did so willingly, or was broken apart, remains debated among the scholars of Muxnir. No record from the Age of Founding mentions the beacons. The first known discovery came in the Age of Arcanum, when Eilistraee, on one of her quests into the Underdark, uncovered a beacon holding a power greater than her own. She learned what she could from it and spread its light to her followers, whose descendants became the Grey Drow and who later founded Muxnir. Over the millennia since, the faithful of Muxnir have gathered beacons from across the world, and the city remains the centre of their study and worship. In Godsnight 3068 PD, the priests of Muxnir foresaw the presence of a beacon within a residuum mine, and the Onyx Tower began excavations soon after. At the time of writing, the beacon has yet to be found. ### Known Beacons - **The Cathedral of Light, Muxnir** - Nineteen beacons are kept within the central vault of the cathedral, which serves as its prayer room. It is the largest known collection in the world. - **The Onyx Tower, Muxnir** - A single beacon is held by the Onyx Tower, the seat of Muxnir's First Mage, for study. - **The Moonlit Outpost** - A beacon sits within the Moonlit Outpost on the Moonlit Path, its presence a secret to most. - **Strixhaven University** - A single beacon is held by Strixhaven University, where it is studied by the university's scholars. - **The Aekaciran Mage's Guild** - Two beacons are held by the Aekaciran Mage's Guild. - **Group 8274** - A beacon is said to be held by the famous adventuring group, though this has never been confirmed. - **Royal courts and private collections** - A number of beacons are held in royal courts and private collections across the world, where they are treated as royal artifacts. Their owners are often courted by Muxnirian dignitaries.
