### About
House Redhayn is a human noble house of Goldsgrove and its royal house, ruling the kingdom from Hearth Keep in Goldhearth. The house traces its beginnings to the end of the Dawn-War, when Josiah Redhayn, a man made rich by the gold found in the hills around the ruins of Pelor's fortress, paid for the raising of the Hall of the Sun and the city that grew around it. Over the centuries that followed, the Redhayns built the scattered villages of the region into cities, and those cities in turn swore themselves to Goldhearth, until in 358 PD the first Queen of Goldsgrove was crowned in the Hall of the Sun. Today Goldsgrove is the largest and most prosperous kingdom in Aekacira, known for its gold and silver, its fields and its soldiers, and House Redhayn has given the realm many High Monarchs, though it has never sought the title for itself. Its arms, a golden sheaf of corn upon a field of red, are among the best known in Aekacira.
### History
When Pelor departed from the Material Plane at the end of the Dawn-War, his fortress in the heart of what is now Goldsgrove lay in ruins. It had been a great walled stronghold, filled with vast halls and towers, and none of it had survived the war. There was no kingdom in those lands then, only a scattering of villages and homesteads across the plains, and it was among them that Josiah Redhayn made his fortune, from the gold discovered in the hills nearby. When the Swords of Pelor set about raising a temple upon the ruins of the fortress's cathedral, it was Josiah who paid for it, and around the Hall of the Sun grew the city of Goldhearth. Upon the foundations of the fortress's old keep, his descendants raised their own seat, Hearth Keep, and from there House Redhayn has ruled ever since.
For the first two centuries after the Divergence, the Redhayns ruled Goldhearth and the lands around it as kings in all but name. Rather than conquer their neighbours, they invested in them, pouring their gold into the villages of the region and building them up into towns and cities, which in turn swore themselves to Goldhearth. Amberholt was the first to do so, in 122 PD, followed by Silverridge in 148 PD and Brambleford in 234 PD, along with a great many smaller towns and villages. When Bayharbour swore its allegiance in 358 PD, the work was complete, and Alysanne Redhayn was crowned the first Queen of Goldsgrove in the Hall of the Sun. Every monarch of Goldsgrove since has been crowned there.
Queen Alysanne I was a renowned diplomat, and it was under her that Goldsgrove took its place in Aekacira. In those days, Kraesuine, the old seat of Erathis, was a small secular town amid the ruins of her once-grand city, while Regania and Minraine were already established kingdoms. Demolduhr was then no more than a collection of allied halfling cities and towns, apart from the dwarven strongholds of the mountains. Alysanne and the monarchs of Minraine and Regania understood that their three kingdoms, with their vastly different trades, were stronger together than apart: Goldsgrove with its farms and precious metals, Minraine with its ships and fisheries, and Regania with its lumber. In 392 PD, after long talks between the three crowns, Kraesuine was chosen as the centre of a united Aekacira, and the city was raised again. From the very first talks, the three kingdoms meant to bring in Demolduhr, with its smiths and brewers, and the horse lords of Zaenov, as in time they did. The first High King was Torryk Fenrick III of Regania, the most renowned ruler of the three, who had reigned for forty years, strengthened the defences of Zhavrin's Gate and overseen the founding of the Moonlit Path, and who took the name Torryk I upon his election. House Redhayn has given many High Kings and Queens to Aekacira since, but it has never been selfish in its votes. Content with what it already has, the house has long seen the High Monarchy as a step down rather than a prize.
In 1307 PD, the crown gave its blessing to the passing of Amberholt from the extinct House Amberholt to House Sylvaris, and every twenty years since it has offered up the rights to the mines beneath the city's mountains, rights which the Sylvaris have won each time. Under the Sylvaris, Amberholt has grown into the largest and richest city in Aekacira, and the crown has more than once borrowed from them.
The house's most celebrated king was Garlan Redhayn II. In 1927 PD, an orcish and goblinoid horde led by a champion of Gruumsh known as the Blood King marched out of Vangrallag upon Zhavrin's Gate, with demons summoned from Zur-Irqaz at its back. Garlan led the armies of Goldsgrove to the Gate, where they fought beside the Golden Scales, the army of Regania under its king, Yohnn Fenrick III, and all eight Paragons of Pelor's Swords. The horde was broken, but at a terrible cost: Zhavrin himself fell in the skies above the city, King Yohnn was killed, and so was the First Sword of Pelor, Brannoc Deepmantle of Courage, the Blade of Dawn, a dwarf of Khaztharim. Garlan had long been a Knight of the Swords, and in the aftermath of the battle the seven surviving Paragons, setting aside the funeral games that custom demanded, chose him to take the fallen Paragon's place and to lead them as First Sword, both on the same day. Garlan renounced his crown, which passed to his daughter, Jeyne V, and served as First Sword until his death. It remains a great honour for a Redhayn to join Pelor's Swords, and many have served as Knights, but those in line for the throne are strongly discouraged from rising any higher, for beyond that rank they must give up their lands and titles. Only a handful of heirs have ever chosen to.
At the turn of the 21st century, the Minrainian House Locke, which then held both the crown of Minraine and, under High King Padmoor Locke, the High Monarchy, began to press a claim to Brambleford. The pressure was a factor in the breaking away of Roselia, whose lords, the Roses, refused to see their lands become the road for a Minrainian army, and who looked down upon the Lockes as a lesser house. In 2022 PD, King Lothar Locke of Minraine mustered his army, claiming that he meant at last to retake Roselia, while his envoys went on talking of Brambleford. Queen Jeyne Redhayn VI saw through the ruse. A warrior queen, she went to Brambleford in disguise and was waiting within the city when the Minrainian army turned towards it. She revealed herself, broke the army in a swift battle, and slew both Locke brothers herself, in a duel of two against one. That same year, the crowns of Aekacira elected her High Queen, and her son, Garlan IV, took the crown of Goldsgrove.
In 2037 PD, Forest Rose, a prince of the fallen Roselia, came to Goldhearth with his youngest sister, Winter, and soon after married Princess Jeyne, the younger child of King Garlan IV. In the 2040s, the pox swept across every kingdom of Aekacira, killing a great many, and in 2041 PD it took Garlan IV himself. His son, Uthor III, reigned until 2053 PD, when he was elected High King, and the crown of Goldsgrove passed to his sister, who ruled as Queen Jeyne VII until 2092 PD. Every monarch of Goldsgrove since has carried the blood of House Rose.
In the centuries that followed, House Redhayn grew Goldsgrove into the richest of the five kingdoms. Queen Alysanne VII, who reigned from 2198 to 2243 PD, founded the Bank of Goldsgrove in Goldhearth, a rival to the gnome-owned Bank of Aekacira, which now holds the kingdom's gold reserve and the private vaults of many of its noble houses. Garlan III, who was elected High King in 2721 PD, paved the Gold Road from Bayharbour to Zhavrin's Gate along its whole length and set patrols to guard it.
In the 31st century PD, King Gwayne Redhayn took the throne of Goldsgrove in 3001 PD and ruled for most of his life, until he was elected High King in 3040 PD, leaving the crown to his eldest son, Erryk. When Gwayne died in 3057 PD, Erryk was elected High King in turn. The crown of Goldsgrove should then have passed to Gwayne's second son, Steffan, but Steffan was the Commander of the Golden Scales, whose magically binding contract forbade him from taking it, and so the crown passed to his younger brother, Leywald. Erryk died in 3065 PD, unmarried and without children, and was succeeded as High Queen by Maege Fenrick. King Leywald rules Goldsgrove today, and his heir, Prince Garlan, has won renown in the tourneys of Aekacira and serves as a Knight of Pelor's Swords.
### Hearth Keep
Hearth Keep stands at the heart of Goldhearth, raised upon the foundations of the old keep of Pelor's fortress, beside the Hall of the Sun, which rose from the ruins of the fortress's cathedral. Where the keep was once a soldier's stronghold, it is now a royal castle built to speak of power and wealth, its banners of gold upon red flying from every tower, though it has lost none of its strength, and it remains one of the best defended castles in Aekacira. Within are a great ballroom and a feasting hall, where the court of Goldsgrove gathers for its celebrations, and a private chapel to Pelor for the royal family. The most famous of its rooms is the Hall of Crowns, where the crowns of past kings and queens of Goldsgrove are kept. Each new monarch chooses a crown from among them to be crowned with, or, if they feel it is warranted, has a new one made; King Leywald wears a crown of golden bushels of wheat studded with gemstones.
Beyond the keep, across the ground where the rest of the fortress once stood, lie the royal training grounds, with their barracks, tourney grounds and archery ranges. It is here that the summer camps for the children of Goldsgrove begin each year, before they set out across the kingdom as travelling camps.
